Human Touch
Sherlock's career is unified by a steady, humanitarian instinct: to show up for other people and to take the particulars of each life seriously. Theatre keeps that instinct close to the surface, letting him inhabit the unvarnished human experience: the grief and ambition of the Shakespearean tragedies, the social absurdities and reconciliations of the comedies, the earnest feeling of contemporary musicals. What he draws from it is attention and respect for what people actually carry with them.
That same instinct runs through his civic work. Building Drupal sites for the Lincoln School PTA, the Rutherford Theatre Company, and Broadway Bound (and migrating them from proprietary platforms to open-source ones) puts control in the hands of the volunteers and small organizations who use them, not vendors. Multilingual mediation at JPMorganChase and front-line labor at UPS and Amazon treat each client, colleague, and customer as a person rather than a transaction. Years of judging the Academic Decathlon at the state level and organizing the Northern NJ Drupal Meetup do the same kind of unglamorous work, meeting each person as they actually are. The theatre, the PTA, the meetup, and the loading dock are where the work earns its keep, by serving the real, often messy lives of the people who depend on it.
